Do you know how to check the exhaust system on your car? Problems with the exhaust can mean the engine won’t work properly and can have an impact on how efficiently the car uses fuel.
Here’s how to safely and effectively check the exhaust on your car
Listen to the noises the exhaust makes – it should be a low hum, with no rasping or pulsing. Any sudden changes in noise could indicate damage to the pipe.
Inspect the exhaust – there should be no visible holes or splits in the metal tube, and when the car is revved there should be fumes coming from the end of the pipe only.
Check for any movement (ONLY do this when the car is cold – it will need to cool down after being used). The pipe shouldn’t waggle when gently moving the exhaust from side to side.
Keep an eye on engine performance and fuel consumption and know what’s normal for your car – any changes could indicate problems with the exhaust.
Don’t under any circumstances try dangerous methods such as breathing in the exhaust fumes yourself or putting a bag over the end of the exhaust.
